What I do with your email address

I collect one thing, use it for one purpose, and you can end it in one click. This page is written to be read rather than to protect me. If any of it is unclear, that is my fault and I would like to know.

The whole thing, in five lines

What I collect: your email address. Nothing else.
Why: to send you the fortnightly newsletter you asked for. Nothing else.
Who else sees it: Kit, the company that sends the emails. Nobody else, ever.
How long: until you unsubscribe, then it is deleted.
I never sell it, rent it, or hand it to anyone else. Not for money, not as a favour.

Robert Henry. I run this site personally, and I am the data controller — which means the decisions about your email address are mine, and so is the responsibility for them.

What I collect, and when

Your email address: Only if you type it into the signup box and confirm it. You are never signed up by accident, and I never add anyone by hand.
The date you signed up, and the internet address you signed up from: Recorded automatically by Kit. It exists so that if anyone ever asks whether you really agreed to this, there is an honest answer. It is not used for anything else.
Whether you opened an email, and whether you clicked a link in it: Kit records this by default. I use it to see whether an issue was any use, and for nothing else. If you would rather I did not, say so and I will switch it off for your address.

There is no advertising on this site, no tracking pixels, no analytics that follow you around, and no cookies dropped for marketing.

Why I am allowed to have it

Because you gave it to me and confirmed it. In legal terms that is consent, and it is the only basis I rely on. Consent means you can withdraw it at any time, and doing so costs you nothing and requires no explanation.

Double opt-in is switched on, which means you get one email asking you to confirm before anything else is sent. If you never click it, you never hear from me again.

Who it is shared with

One company: Kit (formerly ConvertKit), which stores the list and sends the emails. They act on my instructions and cannot use your address for their own purposes.

Kit is based in the United States, so your email address leaves the UK. That transfer is covered by the standard legal protections companies use for this, and I check that is still true before each renewal rather than assuming it.

That is the entire list. No advertisers, no data brokers, no “trusted partners”, no sponsors. If that ever changes I will say so here and email you before it takes effect — not after.

How long I keep it

Until you unsubscribe. When you do, your address is removed from the list.

Kit keeps a minimal record that you unsubscribed, because the alternative is accidentally adding you again later. That record is your email address and the fact you left — nothing about what you read.

What you can ask me to do

All of these are free, and I will do them within a month — usually the same day.

Show me what you have: I will send you everything held against your address.
Delete it: Gone, and I will confirm when it is done.
Correct it: If the address is wrong, tell me the right one.
Stop emailing me: One click at the bottom of any email. You do not have to ask me, and I am not told why.
Stop tracking whether I open them: Ask, and I will turn it off for your address.

If you think I have handled your data badly, please tell me first — I would rather fix it. But you have the right to go straight to the Information Commissioner’s Office without speaking to me at all, and that right is not affected by anything on this page.

If this page changes

The date below changes with it. If a change actually affects you — who your address is shared with, what it is used for — I will email you about it before it happens, rather than quietly updating a page nobody re-reads.
